Athletics in Active Schools

[ Zoom ]
athletics

Based around the key skills of running, jumping and throwing, athletics provides a great foundation for all aspects of physical activity and sport and is an integral part of the PE curriculum in schools across all stages.

Active Schools work in close partnership with Athletics Development to increase and enhance opportunities for children and young people within the local area to experience various athletics disciplines. Active Schools Coordinators promote and encourage pupils to participate in the various inter-school events and the 'Star-Track' holiday programmes that are organised each year. As a result we have seen a significant rise in the numbers of schools and pupils getting involved.

In recent times, Active Schools Coordinators have been working closely with the Athletics Development Officer to roll out the Elevating Athletics resource pack to schools - a fantastic pack containing numerous activity cards, a DVD showing good practice examples and general information that is valuable for teachers, leaders and coaches.  An Elevating Athletics CPD course has also been organised and was well received by teachers and volunteers.

As with other sports and activities, we provide training, equipment and mentoring in athletics to support volunteers delivering extra-curricular clubs.  Through the work of the Active Schools Coordinators a number of new athletics clubs have been created in schools e.g. the Run-Jump-Throw club at Gavinburn Primary School.
