Dance in Active Schools

[ Zoom ]
active schools cheerleading

Working in partnership with The STAND, West Dunbartonshire's Dance Development Officer and local dance instructors and clubs, we co-ordinate and promote various dance programmes for school-aged children and young people. Designed to offer an alternative to traditional sports activities, dance is especially popular with girls and young women.

Through after-school clubs and holiday programmes which are delivered by local dance artists and teachers with expertise in this area, boys and girls of all ages have been introduced to a variety of dance styles including cheerdance, hip hop, break, disco, capoeira, salsa and contemporary.

Encouraged to experiment with movement and create their own routines, pupils have also had opportunities to perform their work on the stage to live audiences. An example of impact would be the group of secondary boys from St Columba’s High School who formed their own break dance group and continue to meet during lunch times and after school on a regular basis. This group have performed at various events all over central Scotland and qualified for the Scottish Break Dance Championships.

With a number of coaches working with Active Schools, we are keen to organise sessions within schools and also to facilitate the use of Dance as a means of encouraging extra-curricular physical activity.

Active Schools also organise CPD training and support for any teacher or volunteer who is interested in developing their own skills for teaching dance and leading activities.
