Hockey is an integral part of the PE curriculum in many of West Dunbartonshire’s schools and the Hockey Development Officer has a well established programme which is available to all primary schools during curriculum time. Active Schools have assisted a number of schools through the provision of suitable hockey equipment and resources, with a view to sustaining and developing extra-curricular opportunities for pupils. In conjunction with Hockey Development, we also provide access to training and mentoring opportunities for those involved in the delivery of the sport e.g. teachers and school staff, parents and those involved in community groups.
In recent times, partnership working with Hockey Development has enabled the establishment of the 'West Dunbartonshire National Primary Hockey Qualifying Tournament', held each year in May at East End Park, Dumbarton. Two teams qualify from this event to represent West Dunbartonshire in the National Primary Hockey Festival in June at the National Hockey Academy, Peffermill, Edinburgh. This has been a great success, with a large proportion of West Dunbartonshire schools participating.
