Netball in Active Schools

[ Zoom ]
Netball

Widening opportunities for girls and young women to participate and compete in sport is a key priority for sportscotland and a key area of work for Active Schools.  By encouraging the growth of the game of Netball in schools and the community, we are enabling more girls to participate in physical activity and sport. Although not exclusively a game for females, it is a game that is particularly popular with girls and young women.

There are numerous local opportunities for school-aged children to get involved in Netball.  Participation can be through after-school and lunchtime clubs that are held in many West Dunbartonshire schools or at the various participation centres run by Sports Development. Each primary school also has the opportunity to take part in termly Active Schools Netball festivals, where the emphasis is on fun and friendly competition.

Netball is widely taught within the primary school sector, both during curriculum PE and as an extra–curricular activity. To help teachers, leaders and coaches introduce and develop the game with primary-aged children, Active Schools Coordinators encourage Mini-netball (a modified version of the adult game, devised by Netball Scotland).

School staff and volunteers involved in the delivery of netball are encouraged to attend relevant training and CPD courses to increase their knowledge and confidence in coaching the sport. Active Schools very often cover the costs of these courses.
