The clubgolf programme was launched in 2003 to fulfil the Scottish Government’s promise to provide every child in Scotland with an opportunity to experience golf, part of Scotland’s commitment to the game which formed part of the successful bid to host the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.

The introductory game 'firstclubgolf' is now well established across the country, and provides children with an opportunity to experience golf in Primary School. Firstclubgolf is a modified version of the game which utilises plastic clubs, rubber tee mats, tennis-like balls and sticky targets so that it can be delivered safely and effectively in school games halls and playgrounds. In addition to these resources, schools also receive resource cards, suggested lesson plans and instructional posters to help in the planning and delivery of lessons.
Training from Active Schools
Active Schools Coordinators across Scotland have been trained as firstclubgolf tutors and are currently involved in the roll-out of the programme to all primary schools. A key element of this is the training and support given to teachers in order that golf can be delivered year-on-year by teachers to primary pupils as part of their curriculum PE. In West Dunbartonshire, we have provided firstclubgolf training and resources to numerous primary schools and we plan to achieve full roll-out by 2009-10. The Active Schools Coordinators also provide support to teachers when the time comes to deliver it in curriculum PE (usually spring or summer term).
The clubgolf programme
The intention of clubgolf is to offer pathways for continued participation in golf to children who have been introduced to the game at school. Establishing links with local golf clubs and facilities is vital to allow children to continue their interest in the game through structured junior coaching and clubgolf stage 1, 2 and 3 programmes. We work closely with the clubgolf regional manager to create, develop and sustain these links.
