Funded by the Youth Sport Trust and sportscotland, the TOP Programme works to assist Scotland’s primary schools and community organisations to support children in increasing physical activity and skill levels and to encourage their involvement in physical activity and sport.
The three key components of the programme are training, resource cards and equipment - each designed to support teachers and other leaders in providing children with a high quality and enjoyable introduction to PE and sport as well as clear pathways – from play to sport and from school to community.
TOP Play (for 4 to 9 year olds) concentrates on the essential core skills such as throwing, catching, running and jumping, whilst TOP Sport (for 7 to 11 year olds) develops skills in specific sports such as Tennis, Netball, Rugby and Hockey. Both resources are made up of activity cards and large bags of child-friendly play and sport specific equipment.
We completed the roll this programme to West Dunbartonshire's primary schools during 2007-08 and are now involved in supporting its development within local communities. In recent times we have trained numerous out of school care and sports development staff so that the resources can be utilised by children beyond school PE.
If you would like to know more or would like to request training in TOPs please contact the team through the details below. Please note we are not able to provide the resource cards or bags as these were only available for the roll-out to schools (funded by the Youth Sport Trust). We can however provide advice on funding etc. to help you with the purchase the relevant resources.
