Sports Leaders UK - Young Leader Award Programme

The Young Leader Award (YLA) is a programme of leadership training [certified by Sports Leaders UK] for young people between the ages of 9-13 years old that promotes them working with younger children, teaching leadership skills through a range of games and activities.

The award focuses on specific skills such as giving instructions, the organisation of people and equipment, and the use of space and teaches these topics through a practical, activity based, holistic approach. In this way, the Young Leaders 'learn by doing' and, by the end of the course, will not only have the confidence and ability to lead others but will also have knowledge and experience of an extensive range of games and activities.

The Young Leader Award is a fantastic resource in helping pupils to achieve the 4 capacities of Curriculum for Excellence and there are numerous cross-curricular links and connections to be made through the delivery of the YLA to senior primary pupils e.g.

·         Listening and Talking/Reading/Writing (Languages)

·         Number and Information Handling (Mathematics)

·         People, society, economy and business (Social Studies)

·         Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport (Health and Wellbeing)

The Active Schools Team can support primary schools in WDC by assisting with delivery of the Young Leader Award and provide on-going support to make this programme sustainable within the school curriculum.

WDC Active Schools have produced a set of 5 lesson plans to be used to deliver the Young Leader Award. These can be found to download below along with the corresponding worksheets and other required resource cards.
