West Dunbartonshire Leisure operate using the Scottish Swimming Learn to Swim Programme. We offer a range of swimming lessons from Adult/Baby classes right up to adult swimming lessons.
Adult/Baby (6 Months to 18 Months) VALE OF LEVEN & PLAYDROME ONLY – Introduces the young swimmer to the water for the first time with support from an adult. Early submersion and manoeuvring in the water is introduced in a fun & relaxed atmosphere for all participants.
Adult/Child (18 Months to 3 years old) VALE OF LEVEN & PLAYDROME ONLY – Introduces the young swimmer to the water for the first time with support from an adult. Early submersion and manoeuvring in the water is introduced in a fun & relaxed atmosphere for all participants.
Level 1 (3-4 years old only) VALE OF LEVEN & PLAYDROME ONLY – Introduces the young non-swimmer to the aquatic environment. Establishes early floating and breathing practices whilst being supported by an adult in the water.
Level 2 – (4 years old only) – The underwater environment is introduced with the introduction of submersion whilst building on the swimmers growing confidence in being safe in the water and moving confidently.
Level 3 – (5 years +) – Early swimming stroke practices are introduced into this level with beginner freestyle and backstroke practices. Floatation skills, confidence underwater and safe entries & exits from the water are reinforced and progressed.
Level 4 – Continues to build on special awareness with the swimmer performing tasks upside down. Treading water with different techniques is introduced and the importance of water safety emphasised. Swimming strokes are taken further with the addition of basic breaststroke actions.
Level 5 – Basics of tumbling and streamlining provide the swimmer with the ability to refine their orientation and movement through the water. Fundamentals of swimming and kicking for a set distance are also introduced.
Level 6 – Undulating and sculling techniques are essential to this level. Swimmers can also build on their motor skill patterns being developed in the swimming strokes, diving practices and general movement throughout the water. For many swimmers this is the first step on the pathway to club & competitive swimming.
Level 7 – This level introduces early endurance swimming practices including a minimum of 50m swim and builds on personal safety skills in deeper water. The swimmer will be able to demonstrate full stroke technique in all 4 competitive swimming strokes.
Level 8 – The final level introduces elements of rhythm to the swimming stroke technique and builds upon skills learned in streamlining, sculling, diving and kick and pull to provide the swimmer with all the necessary skills to pursue activity and any aquatic discipline.
Adult Swimming Lessons – Adult lessons are designed to be very sociable, focusing on what you as a swimmer wishes to learn. All participants should be aged 14 years + in order to participate. Various sessions are available in our 3 pools

The levels offered in the Learn to Swim programme can vary dependant on the pool attended for lessons
