Consultation meetings - a guide

Consultation Meeting is an opportunity to share information. At the end we aim to come up with a plan of action to address concerns.

The meeting is meant to be supportive. Everyone will be working together in the best interests of the child or young person.

Everyone who is there has a responsibility to think of ways forward. So, we will listen to each other’s views, consider what is currently working, how this is helpful and decide next steps.

Who will be at at the meeting?

The head teacher or head of the early years centre will invite the people most concerned about your child’s situation to meet with the educational psychologist.

This will include:

  • you (parent / carer)

  • a relevant teacher or key-worker

  • other relevant professionals

As your child’s views are important, staff in school will discuss with you how your child’s views can be included in the discussion. It may be right for your child to attend all or part of the meeting.

Where will it be held?

The meeting will usually be held in:

  • a room set aside for the meeting in the school / early years centre

  • during the school day

What will happen at the meeting?

The Educational Psychologist will lead the meeting, complete any necessary forms and give these to everyone who attends. The parent / carer / young person will be asked to allow information to be passed to other agencies, like Social Work. If the psychologist has carried out an Education Assessment then a report will be given to parents.

This report will be given to other people if agreed by the parent.

Everyone present will explore:

  • the difficulties that your child is having

  • his or her strengths or signs of ability or skill

  • what might be adding to the problem

  • what has already been tried

  • what has already had some success

  • what else might be used to bring about a positive change

At the end of the meeting an Action Plan will be drawn up that will:

  • set out next steps

  • agree roles and responsibilities

  • agree timescales for assessment and any further meetings

  • make clear how the parent/carer will be kept informed of progress
