How will I know what the Psychologist will do?
The psychologist will meet with parents, school staff, other professional staff (if involved) and the child or young person to:
Will my views as a Parent/Carer always be looked for?
Parental agreement for the involvement of an educational psychologist will always be needed unless in exceptional circumstances. In some situations, the young person is able to give informed consent on his or her own behalf.
The assessment will always take account of the views of children and young people. As, it is important that parents / carers and the child or young person understand and agree to the aims of any assessment.
How long will the psychological assessment take?
It may be completed in one meeting. Or, it may take longer if the psychologist needs to gather information from a range of people including the child. The time taken will depend on:
-
the reason for the assessment
-
information already available
-
the type of new information that needs to be gathered
-
the number of people involved
Will I receive a report?
Yes - There either be:
A written report
A verbal report at a school feedback meeting
Or if the Eduicational Psychologist's assessment has been part of a multi-agency assessment there may be a joint report with the other professionals involved.
If a written report has been prepared then a copy will be sent to the parents/carer, school and other relevant professionals as agreed with the parents. The results of the assessment will be written to make sure they are clear and easy to understand.
