Primary Education

There are 34 primary schools in West Dunbartonshire, attended by about 9,000 pupils. Major changes have occurred in primary education in recent years, with the introduction of the 5-14 programme which aims to achieve continuity and progression in all areas of the primary school curriculum, and create a smooth transition from primary to secondary school.

We aim to create a safe and happy environment which allows all pupils to achieve their full potential. This is achieved through the broad and balanced Curriculum for Excellence, taking account of the needs and abilities of each individual pupil, and allowing them to develop at their own rate intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally.

The 5-14 curriculum is divided into five broad curricular areas: language, mathematics, environmental studies, expressive arts and religious and moral education.

The aim of the 5-14 programme has been to promote the teaching of a broad, coherent and balanced curriculum that offers all pupils continuity and progression as they move through school.
