Special Education

We are committed to providing education for all. This includes providing a high quality of education to all young people with special educational needs including those with physical, sensory, behavioural, communication and learning difficulties.

Each child's needs are assessed by our psychological services staff, in consultation with teachers and the child's parents. The purpose of the assessment is to determine what kind of education will be most appropriate to the child's needs.

Where possible, children attend their local primary or secondary school with the appropriate level of specialist help and support. Children whose needs cannot be met in their local school are placed in an appropriate school either locally or, in a few cases, outwith West Dunbartonshire.

Performance and Policies and Procedures

The performance of West Dunbartonshire's schools can be viewed at the Scottish Government's Scottish Schools Online website: www.scottishschoolsonline.gov.uk

Scottish Schools Online provides information on each school in West Dunbartonshire. This information includes:

  • numbers of pupils
  • exam results
  • destinations of school leavers.

Scottish Schools Online also gives you access to school inspection reports from Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education (HMIe) once you have searched for a school by local authority. Schools can also provide information on the performance of individual children directly to parents.
