Dunbartonshire Local Biodiversity Action Plan

Dunbartonshire Biodiversity Action Plan

The Environmental Assessment (Scotland) Act 2005

West Dunbartonshire Council has prepared the Dunbartonshire Biodiversity Action Plan in accordance with the Environmental Assessment (Scotland) Act 2005.  The Environmental Report has identified, described and evaluated the likely significant effect on the environment of implementing the Action Plan and its reasonable alternatives.  A copy of the post-adoption statement lodged on 12 July 2010 to the SEA Gateway can be found below.

This joint plan, funded by East Dunbartonshire Council and West Dunbartonshire Council, and supported by Scottish Natural Heritage and the Dunbartonshire Biodiversity Partnership aims to help species and habitats thought to be in decline.

Aimed at the general public, schools, conservation interest groups, businesses, non-government organisations and Council departments, the plan aims to give a very broad overview of the issues facing nature conservation in Dunbartonshire today.

The Plan is divided into 4 main parts. The first part gives an overview of biodiversity, the reasoning behind the drawing up of the Dunbartonshire Local Biodiversity Action Plan and finally the funding streams and mechanisms that could be used to implement the work.

Section 2 gives a summary description of the main landscape types found in both East and West Dunbartonshire, along with a general description of the sites that are known to be important to nature conservation.

Section 3 details the four main groups that will form the basis of the implementation work of the Dunbartonshire Biodiversity Partnership focusing on Urban, Rural, Woodland and Wetland (including Coastal) areas.

Examples of key projects that form some of the actions of the LBAP include:

development and implementation of the Integrated Habitat Network as part of the Glasgow & Clyde Valley Green Network, production of Local Nature Conservation Site reviews for both geological and ecological features of interest, creation of an Non-native Invasive Species Forum, designation of additional Local Nature Reserves in East and West Dunbartonshire, restoration of key wildlife sites, production of environmental advice notes for planners and local residents, revision of council management operations for amenity grassland and hedgerow maintenance, and implementation of a number of community- and NGO-based projects funded primarily through the Council's Biodiversity Grants Scheme.

Finally, the last section is aimed at local residents and schools, and gives tips on how everyone can help biodiversity in their local area. More so now than ever, we need the support of landowners, developers and the general public to look after our wildlife so that we can pass on a healthy balance down to future generations.
