The Flood Prevention and Land Drainage Act 1997 ensures that West Dunbartonshire Council carries out flood prevention duties, an outline of the requirements is detailed below:
The Act requires the Council to:
- Periodically assess specific areas to determine whether there is a likelihood of flooding.
- Maintain the efficiency of flood defences and watercourses in order to reduce the likelihood of flooding.
- Act upon our statutory duty to implement flood prevention measures.
- Publish a report every 2 years on the actions taken and further measures proposed, together with a recording of the occurrences of flooding of land since 26th November 1997.

The Council will, in addition:
- Respond to public concerns over specific flood events
- Seek maximum funding and specific approvals from the Scottish Office
- Use specialist consultants to assist in and review the Council's proposals
- Liase closely with all interested parties who can facilitate flood risk reductions
- Prepare guidelines for road and housing developers to follow, and take account of, in their operations
- Maintain and develop information systems to enable Council Departments to take flooding aspects fully into account
- Increase efficiency and coverage of flood warning systems.
