What is Sustainable Development?

The goal of sustainable development is to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life without compromising the quality of life of future generations.

Sustainable development is often described as a ‘joined-up’ approach, looking at our economic, social and environmental needs and acknowledging that these three needs are interdependent, for example, we need to look after our environment in order for it to provide us with the resources we need to live healthy, safe lives which in turn enables us to contribute to the economy through work or other activities.

West Dunbartonshire Council has produced a Sustainable Development Strategy (2008 – 2012) which brings together existing initiatives, plans and policies which contribute to sustainable development and identifies areas for improvement or further action to move towards achieving the goals of sustainable development.

The strategy has been split to allow faster downloading, to download a copy of the Sustainable Development Strategy select;
