Policy

Waste management is entering a period of immense change. As a nation Scotland has a poor recycling and resource reuse and recovery record, with most of our waste being historically consigned to landfill. West Dunbartonshire Council is committed to providing accessible and appropriate recycling facilities throughout the area. In order to meet the targets established in the EU Directive on the landfill of waste, West Dunbartonshire Council has developed a Strategic Waste Implementation Plan which sets out measures the Council will undertake in a bid to meet these targets.

Waste management in West Dunbartonshire is facilitated by the Waste Services department, with specific recycling and waste prevention opportunities and initiatives promoted by the Waste Aware team. 'Waste Aware' is a national campaign to encourage recycling and promote a reduction in waste more generally.

Performance

SEPA produces an annual report on the waste collected by, or on behalf of West Dunbartonshire Council, and every local authority in Scotland. Each report provides comprehensive information on municipal waste arisings, recycling and composting, and disposal during the relevant financial year. Additionally, an overall Scotland report is produced for comparison purposes.
