A Guide to Waste Services

West Dunbartonshire Council operates a minimum weekly waste collection service for householders. The waste is collected by means of individual wheeled bins, communal bins or plastic sacks. The specific day of collection is fixed for the whole year, apart from over the Christmas and New Year holiday period when essential changes to collection days are notified to the householders who will be affected.

Collection of waste/recyclable material takes place between 6.30am and 8pm on the designated day. If your bin is not out when the collection vehicle visits, it will not return to empty it later in the day. Missed bins will be emptied as soon as is practicable. Please ensure all waste is stored in bins to prevent litter.

Managing Waste In Commercial and Household Developments

The difficulty, expense and environmental consequences of disposing of waste mean that the emphasis has now to be upon waste minimisation and recycling. This has implications for the design, layout and construction (as well as the operation) of new buildings. The Council has designed guidance for new developments.

Recycling

Blue Bin/Box Kerbside Collections

All low-level households have a new kerbside collection service using a blue bin for the collection of newspapers, magazines, junk mail, cardboard, plastic bottles, food cans and drinks cans. These bins are collected every four weeks.

The Council, Greenlight Recycling and the Scottish Executive have recently extended a pilot scheme for the collection of recyclable materials from flats, tenements and multi-storey properties and households where a wheeled bin service is not available. These households have a blue box and bag for the collection of paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and cans. The boxes and bags are collected every two weeks from householders doorsteps. In accordance with Fire Service regulations, blue boxes and bags should be stored inside the home and placed on your doorstep on collection days.

You can now place cardboard in your blue bin/box, this includes corrugated cardboard boxes, and food packaging such as cereal boxes. Please remove any plastic film or other packaging materials before placing cardboard in your blue bin/box.

Brown Bin Kerbside Collections

In addition, all low-level households have a new kerbside collection service using a brown bin for the collection of garden waste including clippings, weeds, grass cuttings and plants. These bins are collected every four weeks.

Where Should I Put My Bin, Box or Bag?

Please put your bins out before 6.30am on your collection day. A calendar showing your week of collection can be acquired by phoning the Waste Aware team on: 0845 111 0050. Blue boxes/bags are uplifted by Greenlight. For details of collection dates please call Greenlight on: 01389 721 012.

What Happens on Bank Holidays?
