Recycling Furniture and Electronic Equipment at Home

West Dunbartonshire Council operates services for the collection of good quality items of furniture and waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) which residents no longer require.

The main aim of this is to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill from the West Dunbartonshire area. In 2004 we sent over 60,000 tonnes of waste to landfill. Not only does this cost the Council a substantial amount of money, as we are charged for every tonne we dispose of in this way, it is incredibly harmful to the environment and adds to global warming. The Council is aiming to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill by 40% by 2010 and this service can play a vital role in helping us achieve this target.

Local charity Home from Home, in partnership with the Council, will collect good quality reusable items of furniture, anything ranging from beds to wardrobes, sofas and dining tables, and provide these items at very low cost to local residents who need to furnish their homes. For details please call Home from Home on 01389 733733. These items must be still in a good condition to enable other residents to make use of them.

The Council operates an uplift service for any type of larger electrical or electronic goods which you no longer require, even if these items are no longer fully operational, including televisions, microwaves, game consoles, computers, computer monitors, stereos, CD players and video recorders. Householders with access to transport can also take these items to the Household Waste Recycling Centres.

Items such as computers, microwave ovens, computer monitors and video recorders are broken down into their component parts and these parts recycled into new goods. Not only does disposing of your unwanted electrical and electronic items help to minimise the amount of waste we send to landfill from West Dunbartonshire, it is incredibly environmentally friendly as the recycling of these items eliminates the amount of raw materials and energy required to produce new goods.

West Dunbartonshire Council provides a chargeable special uplift service for bulky household items such as fridges, cookers, carpets, furniture and other large household items which cannot fit into a wheeled bin. The following items will not be collected: rubble, bricks, stone, soils, slates and tiles, timber, demolished buildings or parts thereof, outhouses or parts thereof, garages or parts thereof and any other waste which cannot reasonably be collected by staff using existing vehicles without undue risk either to staff or vehicles.

Standard collection charge as follows:

£15 (paid in advance) for the collection of bulky household waste

It should also be noted that the Council imposes a higher charge for certain items which are deemed to be non-household. Waste articles arising from works of home improvement, repair or alteration, shall be not be eligible for collection under the Councils bulky household waste policy. Large amounts of waste or certain items of waste may require a visit to determine the cost of uplift, which may be additional to the minimum charge.

Minimum collection charge as follows:

£48.20 (paid in advance) for the collection of waste resulting from home improvement, repair or alteration works
