Our approach to our work is summarised in our mission statement:
"Trading Standards aims to enhance the economic welfare and safety of everyone who lives or works in, or visits, West Dunbartonshire by protecting all consumers and traders from unfair or unsafe trading practices. We will do this by providing high quality and best value advisory, educational and enforcement services which are relevant to stakeholders needs and, in particular, which are targeted at alleviating the effects of the high levels of deprivation and social exclusion which exist in West Dunbartonshire."
We have three main priorities:
-
Creating well-informed, confident consumers
We do this by providing information and advice to consumers so that they can make informed choices and shop with confidence. Where problems occur we offer free assistance and support. We can intervene in disputes between consumers and businesses with the aim of negotiating an outcome that is fair to everyone concerned.
-
Creating well-informed, successful businesses
We believe that most businesses want to comply with the law but often don't know what they have to do. Therefore we provide information and advice to businesses to help them to comply with consumer protection law.
-
Enforcement of a fair and safe trading environment
We make sure that businesses comply with consumer protection law. We do that by inspecting shops and factories, investigating complaints from the public, testing goods, checking advertisements and carrying out special investigations. We try to do that in a business-friendly way but, where necessary, we can take enforcement action.
