Dumbarton, the ‘Ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde’, is situated off the A82, approx 10 miles west of Glasgow, on the north side of the River Clyde and astride the River Leven.
Dumbarton Castle, one of the oldest fortified sites in Britain, is positioned on volcanic rock overlooking the Clyde Estuary. It was at one time, a Roman outpost and more recently used as a military base during World War 2. Superb views across the Firth of Clyde can be seen from the fort of the castle.
Situated in the heart of Dumbarton town centre is the Scottish Maritime Museum’s Denny Tank which displays the fully restored Denny experimental water tank, built in 1882 for testing ship designs, reflecting the glorious days of the Clyde Shipbuilding.
