Due to rationing, food was scarce throughout the war. People were encouraged to ‘Dig for Victory’ by growing their own vegetables.
As a class, create your own Victory Garden using the types of plants that were grown in gardens and allotments across the country during WWII.
Some tips for creating your own Victory Garden:
- Find out what types of vegetables were grown at home during the war.
- Remember, there may be some kinds of vegetables can you grow in the class room.
- In your group chose which plants or vegetables you are going to grow.
- Make sure you know who is going to look after and water the garden each week.
- You can use plant-pots, margarine or ice cream tubs to grow plants in.
- Perhaps there is part of the playground where you can plant your garden.
