THEIR PAST YOUR FUTURE SCRAPBOOK

What would you put in your class scrapbook?
Some suggestions:

  • A ‘timeline’ of the war showing what was happening and when
  • Posters and pictures from the war years
  • War time recipes
  • The memories of local people you have interviewed
  • How your local community has changed in the last 60 years

Some tips for interviewing veterans:

Many of these people will have been in the armed forces or children during the war. It is important to remember that they may have some very sad memories and may have lost members of their family. Be sensitive to people when you ask questions.

  • Know what questions you want to ask in advance and have them written down.
  • Make sure you have their name, and how old they were during the war.
  • If possible, provide the questions to the person you are interviewing to give them time to think about it and remember.
  • Make sure you have a pencil and paper or tape recorder for the interview.
  • Explain why you are interviewing the person before you start asking questions.
  • Show good manners and make sure the person is comfortable before you begin.
