Adoption

Thank you for your interest in adoption.  This section should provide you with some of the information on what is involved in adopting a child, as well as how you can apply to become an adoptive parent.

There are children of all ages within West Dunbartonshire Council and the West of Scotland with a wide range of family backgrounds and with particular needs who cannot live within their birth families.  These children need adoptive families where they will be nurtured, protected and given the opportunity to meet their potential.

All kinds of people can become adoptive parents: single, married, divorced, widowed or co-habiting, but you must be over twenty one.

You do not need to be employed, wealthy or own your own home to become an adoptive parent.  You do need to have the ability to offer a stable, loving home to a child and understand that this child may need extra support and help throughout their childhood to compensate for their early experiences.

We are interested in hearing from employed and unemployed individuals for all social and ethnic groups.

Adoption is a lifelong commitment and involves additional challenges to those faced by birth parents.  We especially need to hear from people who can consider older children, family groups and children with disabilities or other special needs.

I hope these pages will help you decide whether you could become an adoptive parent.  Your interest is much appreciated and the Fostering and Adoption Team look forward to hearing from you.
