Active Travel

Lack of physical activity is one of the biggest causes of illness and death in Scotland so we’re encouraging people to try to walk or cycle more as part of a daily routine – can you cycle to your nearest train station or walk to the local shops?  Active travel offers many health benefits including improved fitness, positive mental health, weight loss and reduces your risk of diseases such as strokes, type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease.

In addition, active travel is good for the environment as it reduces the number of cars on the road improving air quality and reducing the ‘carbon footprint’ of West Dunbartonshire.

Walking is beneficial because:

  • It is free and requires no special equipment, other than appropriate footwear
  • It is accessible to all regardless of age, income, location and ability
  • It can easily be incorporated into our daily lives
  • It is within the physical capabilities of most people and is a realistic goal for inactive people
  • It combines all the physical benefits of activity with an opportunity for social contact
  • It can be enjoyed safely and there is a low risk of injury.

The benefits of cycling include:

  • It is fast and convenient
  • It gives you freedom and independence
  • It takes you from door to door
  • It is reliable.
