Local residents are being urged to ensure their electoral details are up to date to avoid losing the opportunity to vote.

Local residents are being urged to ensure their electoral details are up to date to avoid losing the opportunity to vote.

Residents will only be able to have their say in the Scottish Parliament elections next  May if they are properly registered.

In the coming weeks, the Electoral Registration Officer will contact every household to ensure the register is correct, and identify any additional residents who should be included.

Voting rights have been extended, meaning all nationalities are now able to vote in Scottish Parliament and council elections.

David Thomson, Electoral Registration Officer for Dunbartonshire and Argyll & Bute said: “Residents need to keep an eye out for messages from Dunbartonshire and Argyll & Bute Valuation Joint Board, so we can make sure we have the right details on the electoral register for every address in West Dunbartonshire and you are able to vote in any forthcoming elections.

“You might not have been able to vote before but with the extension of voting rights, you may be able to vote now – but only if you are registered.

“The West Dunbartonshire area has had a history of lower response rates to its annual write-out and this could result in under registration or inaccuracies in the registers on polling day so I would encourage everyone to look out for their letter.”

People who have moved recently are particularly encouraged to look out for the voter registration messages from and check the details are accurate.

Andy O’Neill, Head of Electoral Commission in Scotland, said “It doesn’t matter where you were born. If you are aged 16 and over you are able to vote in elections in Scotland but only if you register to vote first. Making sure you provide the necessary information to your electoral registration office when it is needed will ensure the process runs smoothly.”
