New Council homes in Alexandria have been installed with a range of measures to make them safer for tenants with dementia.
The 22 homes at Creveul Court in Alexandria will include glazed doors in kitchen cupboards so the resident can clearly see what is kept inside; traditional hot and cold taps rather than mixers and contrasting colours used on doors and between walls and floors.
The flats will have lift access to upper floors, and each landing will have a different colour of flooring and tiling, with each floor clearly numbered for ease of recognition
There will be a communal gardens with sensory planting, sheltered spaces for gardening and relaxing. Front doors will face into the garden area and be a focus point for the community.
It is anticipated that the town centre location of the development will also benefit elderly tenants who will be able to access local services and public transport easily.
The housing development will be made up of 16 one and two bed flats, 5 terraced one bed bungalows and one wheelchair accessible bungalow with 3 bedrooms.
It is expected to be ready for tenants later this year.
Due to the specialist nature of the properties in this development, a different letting plan has been agreed.
This means the majority of the homes will be allocated to residents who are over 60 or have a specific medical need for the property.
Properties will be allocated to applicants who would benefit from and are most in need to this type of accommodation, including those with mobility or disability needs.
By incorporating dementia design within the Design Standard, West Dunbartonshire Council have committed to delivering more dementia- friendly homes in the future.
Councillor Diane Docherty, Convener of Housing and Communities said: “I am pleased to see these dementia-friendly additions to our design at Creveul Court. This will allow tenants to live as independently as possible and enjoy an active social life with their neighbours. This new development is a welcomed improvement in the heart of Alexandria and residents will be delighted to see the site now housing new purpose built and energy efficient homes right in centre of the town ”
Councillor Caroline McAllister, Vice Convener of Housing and Communities, said: “A lot of thought has been given as to how we can ensure the residents who need this additional support are the ones allocated these flats. When these are complete and tenants have moved in they will be part of a small, supported community which will also allow them to maintain their independence, which is so important.”
