A tenant who recently moved into the Council’s waterfront development has said her new home will improve her life.
Theresa Toward, 56, got the keys to the new flat at Dumbarton Harbour three weeks ago.
She and husband Patrick applied to move after treatment for cancer left Theresa with difficulty navigating the stairs in their previous home.
She says the central location and one-level home have already made a huge difference to the way she lives her life.
She said: “I am so happy with our new home. It is absolutely beautiful but it means much more than that to me. Since having surgery for cancer, my health has never really got back to what it was before. I found it too much to get up and down stairs in our old house, so I was quite restricted. Being on one level now is such a relief and even though we are on the second floor, there are lifts for me to use.
“It is also great to be so central, as walking takes me a bit longer and it means I have easy access to everything. I am much closer to a supermarket, the high street, doctor’s surgery and so many other amenities.
“And the view we get from our flat is a brilliant bonus – we look out onto the Leven and Dumbarton Castle, so it doesn’t get much better than that.”
Theresa was joined by Councillor Diane Docherty, Councillor Ian Dickson and Council Leader Councillor Jonathan McColl this week to mark the handover of the final properties on the site.
The Council has 45 properties in the development made up of a mix of flats and townhouses. Dunbritton Housing Association are the landlord at Phase 1 and 2
The site was formerly home to Dumbarton’s Ballantines whisky distillery.
Councillor Docherty, Convener of Housing and Communities, said: “I am delighted to see this development complete and our tenants happy in their new homes. Hearing how tenants have benefitted from their move has been just wonderful, as they are at the heart of what we do, and I wish them many years of happiness here.”
Councillor Dickson, Vice Convener of Housing and Communities, added: “We are committed to addressing the growing need for affordable housing within West Dunbartonshire, while also ensuring all our properties are constructed with high energy efficiency standards, so we can help to alleviate the challenges of fuel poverty too.”
