The Council has published a draft Conservation Area Appraisal for the Dumbarton Town Centre Conservation Area. Conservation Area Appraisals are prepared by planning authorities as a management tool to identify the special interests and changing needs of conservation areas. Conservation area appraisals inform the preparation of planning policy and development management decisions.

The draft Dumbarton Town Centre Conservation Area Appraisal includes information on the historical development of the area and its different character areas. It identifies positive buildings and features and suggests buildings that should become listed. Key challenges for the conservation area are also identified. Some suggestions for changes to the conservation area boundary are made, including extensions to include Dumbarton Bridge and the Scottish Maritime Museum.
