West Dunbartonshire Council is working with the Cabinet Office and Audit Scotland on a national initiative to assist in the prevention and detection of fraud, this exercise takes place every two years.
The Council will conduct a major data matching exercise as part of the National Fraud Initiative in October 2022, which involves cross-checking personal information to flag-up circumstances that suggest the existence of fraud or error.
Data matching typically involves comparing records held by one body against those held by the same or another body to see how far they match. This process identifies potentially fraudulent claims and payments and allows further investigation to be undertaken to determine the facts.
West Dunbartonshire Council is required by law to protect the public funds it administers and may share information provided to it with other bodies responsible for auditing, or administering public funds in order to prevent and detect fraud.
