A former care home in Old Kilpatrick is set to be demolished next month to make way for new housing.

The site of the former Mount Pleasant care home at 2 Ashtree Court will be cleared after West Dunbartonshire Council’s Tendering Committee this week approved an agreement with contractors Central Demolition Ltd.

The work, which will commence from 1 October, will pave the way for a regeneration of the area – removing a target for vandalism and fire raising to be replaced by a modern housing development.

Tendering Committee convener, Councillor John Millar, said: “Recent incidents of willful fire-raising elsewhere in West Dunbartonshire have clearly demonstrated the risk posed to communities when buildings are unoccupied for too long.

“Therefore, we are pleased to approve the preferred bid by an experienced demolition company who will work quickly to remove the former care home and prepare the site for an exciting new future.”

Submissions from six potential contractors were evaluated by representatives from Housing and Environment, Corporate Procurement Unit, against a set of award criteria which was based on Price and Quality.

Central Demolition Ltd of Bonnybridge, was identified as the preferred bidder in terms of cost and quality with a bid price of £97,930.
