Scope of town centre project expanded after feedback from communities

A regeneration project in the heart of Alexandria has been expanded thanks to feedback received from local communities.
Residents and members of the business community through Alexandria Business Improvement District (BID) agreed that the programme for improvements on Mitchell Way should be widened to incorporate works to upgrade Main Street in order to encourage more people to visit the town.
During a consultation exercise which was undertaken earlier this year asking the public for views on plans to develop Mitchell Way, it became clear that local people believe upgrades to Main Street should be part of the proposals.
Many of the comments gathered during the consultation which included online and face-to-face engagement, involved enhancement of the town centre as a whole and improving pavements and lighting to ensure the area is a safe and welcoming place to visit.
Responses also focused on transforming both Mitchell Way and Main Street into a place where people would choose to visit and spend time in.
The pedestrian route in the heart of Alexandria town centre was identified as a key area for regeneration both by the Council and members of the community as part of the Alexandria masterplan.
The comments provided during this consultation have informed the latest developments within this project.
Conversations will continue with members of the BID to discuss the scope of the project and identify what steps can be taken to improve the town centre.
Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, Councillor David McBride said: “I am delighted that the scope of this project will be widened after feedback was provided from both members of the business community and residents in the local area.
“Public consultation is a key tool for local authorities to engage directly with the people who will be most affected by regeneration projects. This just goes to show how important it is to make your voice heard when you get the opportunity.”
Vice Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, Councillor Lawrence O’Neill added: “It is testament to people involved and invested in the town that they have taken the chance to have their opinions heard and acted upon.
“This is an exciting chapter for Alexandria and I look forward to seeing how these plans progress.”
