Families across West Dunbartonshire are in for a fun-packed summer as the Council launches a series of free and engaging activities over the school holidays.
The Council’s “School Holidays Involve Nurture & Engage” (SHINE) provides funding for external organisations to offer a free six-week action packed programme that will keep children fit, entertained and having fun over the school holidays.
This year the Council will again also offer a programme of free activities which are tailored to families of children with an additional support need.
In partnership with 22 local organisations, families can access a wide range of SHINE activities with attendees having access to a free snack and lunch over July and August. In addition, West Dunbartonshire Foodshare will provide 350 family brunch bags to support families.
Activities suitable for those up to 23 years old will be held in various locations across West Dunbartonshire and are focused on fun social experiences, learning and wellbeing activities, the environment and health.
Families are being encouraged to register their children in activities which include girls and boys football camp; gaming and virtual and reality workshops; nature walks and crafts; trips to the cinema; STEM workshops; arts activities and a treasure hunt.
Councillor Clare Steel, Convener of Educational Services, said: “I am pleased to see such a wide-ranging programme of activities which will be of great benefit to all our children and young people enjoying fun-filled days to keep them busy over the holidays. The summer holidays can be an expensive and challenging time for parents and these camps offer our children and young people the opportunity to learn, meet new friends and have fun over the holidays. I’m sure these events will prove to be really popular again this year and I would like to thank all the organisations who are working in partnership with the Council to provide these fun activities.”
Councillor John Millar, Vice Convener of Educational Services, said: “I would like to thank everyone involved in arranging this programme which offers increased learning opportunities and fun activities at no cost to parents and carers. We have built strong partnerships with local organisations and through working together we are able to offer a six-week programme with an extensive range of activities for children to enjoy.”
