A school which will create a stimulating and supportive learning environment for young people with additional support needs will open in time for the new school year in August.

Riverside Additional Support Needs (ASN) School established on the former site of Riverside Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) will open in August and welcome 11 young people with additional support needs was discussed at the Educational Services Committee.

The school, which will enhance the learning of young people leaving primary schools will eventually accommodate up to 36 pupils.  The building will provide modern, fit-for-purpose educational facilities which are specifically designed to create a stimulating and supportive learning environment. The design of the new school offers a fully accessible and inclusive environment to accommodate the complex needs of the young people.

Education Scotland fully supported the additional secondary school saying the proposal has the potential to bring clear educational benefits for young people with additional support needs attending the new school.

Convener of Educational Services, Councillor Clare Steel, said: “The expansion of the ASN school estate will support young people with additional needs who will be starting their new school term in the brand-new school.  Children will be taught in bright, modern classrooms with purpose built facilities to accommodate the needs of the young people. I have visited the school and was very impressed with the standard of the facilities to ensure all the pupils learn and achieve.”

Councillor John Miller, Vice Convener of Educational Services, said: “I know the parents and carers of young people who will use this new school will be delighted to hear the facility is opening in a couple of months. It’s great to hear staff, pupils along with their parents and carers will be able to visit the school ahead of the new term in August. I look forward to visiting the school myself and seeing how the young people are settling into their new surroundings.”
