West Dunbartonshire residents are being reminded to park responsibly and be aware of restrictions as Council parking enforcement officers begin work this month.

Until recently, Police Scotland were responsible for enforcing parking restrictions, but this was recently decriminalised and the powers transferred to the Council.

The enforcement officers, will have the power to issue a Parking Charge Notice (PCN) to any vehicle which does not adhere to existing parking regulations, indicated by lines and signage.

While there has been no change to the parking restrictions in place around the area, it is hoped a focus on parking enforcement will improve traffic flow, increase road safety and promote fairness and equality across the road network in West Dunbartonshire.

Drivers can find out more about parking responsibly in the Highway Code and further information in relation to West Dunbartonshire’s enforcement is available on the Council website at www.west-dunbarton.gov.uk/roads-parking-travel/parking-and-car-parks/decriminalised-parking-enforcement/

Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, Councillor David McBride, said: “This is an important step in increasing road safety throughout the region. It is aimed at improving driver behaviour so that traffic across the area can move more freely.

“Our parking enforcement officers have a vital role to play in that and I would encourage people to remind themselves about the rules of the road and take heed of road signs and markings so they are not breaching the regulations.”

Vice Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, Councillor Lawrence O’Neill, added: “This is a welcome move which will benefits residents, visitors and business owners throughout West Dunbartonshire. While our officers will be monitoring areas across West Dunbartonshire, motorists and residents should report obstructions and dangerous parking to Police Scotland.

“I would encourage drivers to visit our website and familiarise themselves with the regulations to ensure they are aware of the guidance.  We want all road users and pedestrians to feel safe when using our roads and pavements and I welcome this new service to the area.”
