We are seeking views on West Dunbartonshire Council's Draft Gaelic Language Plan 2026-2031. Please refer to the draft plan available through this consultation before answering the questions.
This draft plan sets out our ambitions for Gaelic in West Dunbartonshire over the next five years. This second Gaelic Language Plan builds on the work undertaken through our first Gaelic Language Plan (2020-2025), in recognition of the Scottish Government's ambition to see an increase in the number of people speaking, learning, using and supporting Gaelic.
West Dunbartonshire Council is committed to making Gaelic more visible, valued and accessible, ensuring it thrives as part of our diverse and inclusive cultural landscape.
Our second Draft Gaelic Language Plan 2026-2031 has been prepared in the context of the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005, the National Gaelic Language Plan 2023-2028 and the Scottish Languages Act 2025. These highlight that the promotion of Gaelic is a shared responsibility and that local authorities and public bodies make an important contribution to supporting the language.
This plan will help us meet our commitment to the aspirations and objectives of the National Gaelic Language Plan, the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Scottish Languages Act 2025.
