A unique collection of information on the history and culture of the Dumbarton and Vale of Leven area.

The heritage centre has many collections about Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven. These include books, maps, pamphlets, photographs, postcards, directories, and newspapers.

Family History

If you are researching your family tree, we have lots of genealogy resources to help.

You can use FREE access on all public library computers for Ancestry Library Edition.

We also sell vouchers for the popular Scotland's People website.

Exhibitions

The centre has exhibitions about the history of Dumbarton and the surrounding area. These change regularly and give the public access to historical documents, photographs, and artefacts from West Dunbartonshire's collections.

Archives

The centre keeps archives for Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven, with records dating back to the 15th century.

We also have many local history books and DVDs, which can be borrowed, used for reference, or bought in the centre.

Research Facility

If you cannot visit in person, we can carry out research on your behalf. Please submit an enquiry using the link below and include any information that will help. The first 30 minutes of research are free, and after that it costs £15 per hour.

Local History Librarians are often available for drop-in visits. If you are making a special journey, it’s best to phone and book an appointment first.
