Construction is now underway on a 22-unit sheltered housing development in the heart of Alexandria.

The project, delivered in partnership with West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP), will provide modern, accessible homes for older residents.

The development, located on Bank Street, will feature 22 one-bedroom sheltered and amenity flats, alongside a communal room and staff office. All of the units will be built to net zero standard. Work began on site in October 2025 and is scheduled for completion in early 2027.

The first phase of the project involves relocating the access road north to create a larger development site. Utility diversions are currently in progress to facilitate this work.

The new homes will replace the outdated Gray Street sheltered housing complex, ensuring residents benefit from improved facilities and a more comfortable living environment.

Existing tenants from Gray Street have been consulted throughout the design process and will receive support to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Meanwhile, the Council is conducting feasibility studies on future options for the Gray Street site.

This development follows similar investment at Willox Park, reinforcing the Council’s commitment to providing high-quality housing for older people across West Dunbartonshire.

Convener of Housing and Communities, Councillor Gurpreet Singh Johal, said: “This is an important development, taking account of the needs of our community and providing homes which are suitable for older people.

“I am delighted that this development has begun which will occupy this central Alexandria site.”

Vice Convener of Housing and Communities, Councillor Hazel Sorrell, said: “Along with the completion of the development at the former Mount Pleasant care home in Old Kilpatrick and construction at Willox Park in Dumbarton, this site is catering for the needs of the older members of our community.

“I look forward to seeing the work progress and to hearing from tenants when they move into their new homes.”

Contractor JR Group is undertaking the works on behalf of the Council.
