A special event is being held next month to mark the 60th anniversary of a Dumbarton Formula One legend’s first race victory.
Sir Jackie Stewart was victorious at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza in 1965 before going on to become an icon in the sport, winning a total of three Championships during his career.
Six years on from the successful Grand Prix Walk and a year since the community came together to mark Sir Jackie Stewart’s 85th birthday, both young and old are set to unite, once again, recognising the sporting hero’s success.
On June 17th, the community is invited to attend a Dementia Friendly Walk which will be 1965 metres long around Levengrove Park. This represents 1965, the year in which Sir Jackie won his first Grand Prix race.
Councillor David McBride, Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “Most people in Dumbarton and throughout West Dunbartonshire have a real fondness for Sir Jackie Stewart. This is set to be a poignant and fitting event to recognise his incredible achievements as one of Scotland’s top sporting icons in the 60th anniversary year of his first Grand Prix victory.”
Councillor Lawrence O’Neill, Vice Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “I am delighted that, following on from the Grand Prix Walk in 2019 and last year’s walk, another exciting event will take place to honour, arguably, the most famous person to hail from Dumbarton.”
The event will also help raise the profile of Sir Jackie’s charity, Race Against Dementia, which he set up following his wife Lady Helen’s diagnosis with the disease. He continues to work to find a cure or effective treatment for the condition.
There is no need to register, just turn up on the day if you want to join in. The route can be viewed at https://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/6430602016
