Braehead Primary pupil’s designs lead the way in keeping roads safe

A Braehead Primary pupil’s forward-thinking design has taken top spot in a major Road Safety Week competition.
Six-year-old Willow Galloway impressed judges from active travel charity Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (formerly Sustrans) and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) with her creative poster promoting the benefits of walking to school.
Entrants were asked to create a design that showed how choosing to walk, wheel, scoot or cycle can make our streets safer, boost our health and help tackle climate change.
The P2 pupil’s entry was selected from more than 700 submissions across 32 schools with a special presentation held on Monday 17 November during an assembly in front of her classmates at Braehead Primary.
Willow’s winning design will now be printed and displayed on banners, coinciding with Road Safety Week, which began on Monday 17 November.
Councillor Clare Steel, Convener of Educational Services, attended the special assembly and met with Willow to discuss her design. She said: “We are incredibly proud of Willow and all the pupils who took part in this competition. Road safety is such an important message, and it’s inspiring to see our young people leading the way with creative ideas that encourage safe and healthy travel.”
Councillor John Millar, Vice Convener of Educational Services, added: “Competitions like this not only raise awareness about road safety but also give children the chance to make a real difference in their communities. Willow’s design is fantastic, and we are delighted that it will be on prominent display.”
