Pupils at Aitkenbar, Lennox and Kilbowie Primary Schools are celebrating after being awarded a sportscotland Gold School Sport Award for their commitment to healthy education.

The award recognises the school’s efforts to put quality physical education and sport at the heart of their planning, practice and ethos.

The schools have shown they value the health and wellbeing of their pupils, with staff along with the Active Schools Coordinator working tirelessly to ensure all young people have a range of opportunities to get active, more often.

A broad timetable of extra-curricular sports clubs ran during 2024/25 including Cross-Country, Dance, Football, Mini-Movers, Multi-Sports and Netball. These clubs were offered across the school ensuring that every child from Primary one to seven had the opportunity to take part in sport outwith the school day. These clubs were delivered by a dedicated group of volunteers comprising school staff, parents, college students and senior secondary pupils who all gave up their time to coach and support the children.

In addition, Primary 7 pupils received Play Leader training delivered by the Active Schools Coordinators and delivered additional physical activity sessions to infant classes. Pupils also enjoyed participating in Active Schools and Sports Development festivals, intra-school events, the daily mile programme, Beat the Street, and whole school Health Weeks where local community sports clubs delivered free taster sessions.

Councillor Clare Steel, Convener of Educational Services, said: “This is fantastic recognition for the schools and everyone involved deserves huge credit. As a Council, we are committed to improving the life chances of our young people and having an active healthy life from a young age is key to being healthy as an adult. I would like to congratulate all the schools on their achievement and for encouraging their pupils to thrive in their physical education and lead active lifestyles.”

Councillor John Millar, Vice Convener of Educational Services, said: “A huge well done to the schools and all the external clubs who have supported the schools in receiving this sportscotland Gold School Sport Award. These awards recognise the outstanding effort by education and also the dedicated Active Schools staff who have worked together to ensure pupils have the opportunity to participate and succeed in a good range of physical activity. I would like to thank our staff and parent volunteers for their commitment as this has been key in the schools receiving these prestigious awards."
