West Dunbartonshire's learning estate is to be reviewed to ensure it delivers maximum educational benefits for children and young people.

Following discussion at the Educational Services Committee today, a working group will be established to assess current accommodation to ensure it continues to meet learners’ needs.

West Dunbartonshire's current school costs are among the highest per pupil in the country, however a significant proportion of this is used for property costs including rates and utility bills.

The group's work will also include consideration of the sustainability of buildings as part of local and national ambitions towards net zero, as well as a review of the Council's Learning Estate Strategy.

Councillor Michelle McGinty, Convener of Educational Services, said: “We recognise that we are in a time of national educational reform, and we remain committed to regularly reviewing and enhancing our education provision to reflect this. The right learning environment is important in supporting pupils to succeed, so I welcome the establishment of this working group to ensure these considerations are fully embedded in future planning.”

Councillor John Millar, Vice Convener of Educational Services, said: “We are seeing significant changes in the education landscape, not least because of the expanding role digital technologies play in the lives of our employees and young people. We must ensure our learning environment aligns with this changing need, so it is timely to review the learning estate strategy so we can continue to offer sustainable buildings which deliver the best education and give children the best start in life.”
