Two major Council home-building projects have been recognised at a national awards ceremony.

At the recent Homes for Scotland Awards, the newly-completed Willox Park development was declared winner of the Small Affordable Development of the Year while Mount Pleasant received a commendation in the same category.

Both developments offer housing for older members of the community.

Earlier this year, tenants moved into their new properties at Willox Park in Dumbarton following previous homes on the site being earmarked for demolition and replaced with new modern energy efficient homes.

Award judges recognised the Willox Park development for excellent customer care, community impact, design quality, innovation and teamwork.

They were impressed by the strength of community engagement, driven by Council officers in collaboration with tenants and progressed by the contractors on site during the duration of the works.

Tenant Billy Leyden, 80, who has lived in the complex for the last 30 years said his new home is a ‘dream come true’.

The new homes at Mount Pleasant in Old Kilpatrick welcomed their first tenants last summer after construction work was completed in less than a year, transforming the former care home site into a vibrant community.

The site, comprising a mix of 19 homes, with hot water and heating provided by low carbon electric heating systems received a commendation at the awards.

The site is close to both bus and train transport, offering residents easy access to the rest of West Dunbartonshire and beyond.

Both developments have been funded from the Council’s Housing Investment Programme supported by the Scottish Government’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme funding.

Councillor Gurpreet Singh Johal, Convener of Housing and Communities, said: “Having seen these two sites from when work began until they were fully completed and welcoming tenants has been fascinating.

“It is an absolute joy to hear that both have been recognised at a national awards ceremony with the Willox Park development ultimately being named the winner in the affordable development category for small developments.

“This is testament to the hard work of Council officers and our partners including the contractors on both sites for seeing these visions become a reality.”

Councillor Hazel Sorrell, Vice Convener of Housing and Communities, said: “I am incredibly proud of officers in our housing service who have contributed significantly to this award win and commendation.

“These developments are changing the lives of older people in our communities for the better and this recognition is thoroughly deserved.”
