Gavinburn early years worker scoops top award

An Early Learning and Childcare Officer has been recognised for her commitment to embedding the Gaelic language within Gavinburn Primary School and Early Learning and Childcare Centre (ELCC).

Sandra Steele scooped the Gaelic Hearts Early Years Award at The Early Years Scotland awards night. The event recognises individuals and organisations for their dedication, innovation and professionalism of people working with Scotland’s youngest children.

Judges were impressed with Sandra’s commitment to the introduction of Gaelic which has been so successful that families are beginning to speak the language at home. Through her love and passion for the Scots language, Sandra has supported staff to lead and grow as professionals, with her colleagues now embracing it in daily practice. In addition, children can confidently recognise Gaelic in spoken and written form.

Judges commended Sandra’s commitment which has created a rich language environment that has inspired an entire community.

Convener of Educational Services, Councillor Michelle McGinty, said: “Congratulations to Sandra on receiving this prestigious award. I am delighted to see her dedication to introduce and maintain the richness, expressiveness and distinctiveness of the Scots language has been supported within Gavinburn.”
