A814 Glasgow Road Closure & A82 Dumbarton Road Left Diverge Closure
This notice informs about planned road closures on the A814 Glasgow Road and the left diverge lane of the A82 Dumbarton Road scheduled from 15 September 2025 to 17 October 2025. The closures are necessary to facilitate essential gas main works under the Exxon Development project commissioned by West Dunbartonshire Council.
Details of the Road Closures and Works
- The A814 Glasgow Road and the left diverge lane of A82 Dumbarton Road will be fully closed during the specified period. Closure of Glasgow Road is from A82 junction to the first bell mouth access of Chivas.
- These works involve the installation of intermediate pressure gas main, including the tie in to existing IP gas man. All works managed by SGN.
- A diversion route will be established to accommodate traffic travelling both eastbound and westbound.
Traffic Management Measures
- To manage traffic flow, 3-way temporary traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of A82 Dumbarton Road and Greenhead Road.
- These lights will operate daily between 07:00 and 19.00 throughout the duration of the works.
- The traffic lights will be manually controlled to prioritise traffic flow on the A82, aiming to minimise disruption.
- The 3-way traffic light system is specifically designed to regulate traffic volume on Greenhead Road turning onto the A82.
- Between the hours of 19.00 — 07:00, 3- way TTL will be removed. All right turns onto the A82 from Greenhead Road will be prohibited and a diversion route will be in place.
- Advanced warning signs and VMS will be installed 2 weeks prior to the closure.
Diversion Routes
- Articulated lorries to use Renton Road slip for access to Dumbarton when heading west on A82. Articulated lorries to use Renton Road slip for access to A82 Eastbound when leaving Dumbarton.
- Traffic travelling from Helensburgh heading East to turn left onto Renton Road from Cardross Road and then proceed to A82.
- Traffic from town centre to use Bonhill Road to gain access to Barloan Roundabout and then onto A82.
- Local traffic to Greenhead Road, Chivas vehicles and Doherty/Lafferty to access A82 via Greenhead Road.
Order
The West Dunbartonshire Council, in exercise of the powers conferred on them under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended and of all other enabling powers make the following Order.
This Order may be cited as The West Dunbartonshire Council (Glasgow Road and Strowans Well Road, Dumbarton) (Temporary Traffic Management) Order 2025 and shall come into operation from Monday the Fifteenth Day of September Two Thousand and Twenty-five and will remain in operation until Friday the Seventeenth of October Two Thousand and Twenty-Five.
In this Order the following expressions have the meanings hereby assigned to them:
- "vehicle" unless the context otherwise requires, means a vehicle of any description and includes a machine or implement of any kind drawn or propelled along roads whether or not by mechanical power.
- "emergency service vehicle" means a vehicle being used by the Police, Fire or Ambulance Services,
No person shall drive or cause or permit to be driven any motor vehicle (with the exception of vehicles taking local access where permitted by authorised road traffic signs or traffic management contractor, emergency service vehicles and vehicles engaged in authorised road occupation) on the lengths of road specified in the schedule of this order.
Nothing in Article 3 of this Order shall prevent any person from causing or permitting a vehicle to wait in the length(s) of road(s) referred to in that article:
- if the vehicle is waiting owing to the driver being prevented from proceeding by circumstances beyond his control or to such waiting being necessary to avoid an accident;
- to enable the vehicle, if it cannot conveniently be used for such purpose in any other road, to be used in pursuance of statutory powers and duties and in particular, but without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing, to enable the vehicle to be used in connection with police, fire and ambulance service purposes;
- if the vehicle is being used for the purpose of a Universal Service Provider collecting or delivering postal packets as defined in section 125 of The Postal Services Act 2000 from premises or posting boxes adjacent thereto;
- to enable the vehicle to be used in connection with funeral operations.
