20mph speed limits
The Scottish Government aims to make built-up areas safer by expanding 20mph speed limits across Scotland. Transport Scotland is fully funding this national programme.
Slower speeds make West Dunbartonshire a safer and more pleasant place to live, work, and visit. Reducing traffic speed improves road safety, lowers the risk of accidents, and cuts down on noise. It also gives people more confidence to walk, wheel, and cycle.
Street selection criteria
Since June 2022, road authorities across Scotland have evaluated 30mph streets to see if they are suitable for a 20mph limit. We look at several key factors to assess each street:
- Roads within 100 metres of schools, community centres, hospitals, or playparks.
- Roads with 20 or more homes or shops over a distance of 400 to 600 metres.
- Areas that attract vulnerable road users.
- Streets where slower speeds will encourage walking, cycling, and community wellbeing.
- Local knowledge and feedback to address specific road anomalies.
Most 30mph streets will change to 20mph. However, some A and B roads with minimal pedestrian activity may remain at 30mph.
Driving and the environment
Large signs will show you where a 20mph speed limit starts and ends.
Slower speeds encourage a smoother driving style with less stopping and starting. This helps traffic flow and can lower fuel consumption. Over time, 20mph limits ease congestion by encouraging more people to walk or cycle for short journeys.
Police Scotland supports improved road safety and is working with us to support the new limit. The 20mph limit relies on a shift in driver behaviour, which will take time to embed.
Local consultations
The 20mph programme has been presented to our Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development committee:
We consulted emergency services, statutory bodies, and the public before making the final order. The final Traffic Regulation Orders reflect technical assessments and vital feedback from community councils, elected members, and local residents.
Monitoring progress
We started a monitoring programme at the beginning of the rollout in 2025. Our team will continue to monitor traffic speeds and casualty trends. This data helps us determine if we need to introduce extra safety measures in the future.
New road safety measures
To support the new 20mph speed limits, we are introducing:
- New 20mph road signs.
- Clear road markings.
