Primary pupils across West Dunbartonshire celebrate Gold School Sport Awards

Pupils at six West Dunbartonshire Schools have been awarded a sportscotland Gold School Sport Award for their commitment to sport and physical education.
Bonhill, Christie Park, Gartocharn, Knoxland, Linnvale and Clydemuir Primary Schools were recognised for their dedication to embedding sport into school life, with Bonhill retaining its award for the second year in a row.
The awards recognise each school’s efforts to put quality physical education and school sport at the heart of their planning, practice and ethos.
The schools, along with the Active Schools Coordinators, work tirelessly to ensure all pupils have a range of opportunities to get active, more often.
Gold awarded schools ran a broad timetable of extra-curricular sports clubs during 2025/26 including Cross-Country, Curling, Dance, Football, Mini-Movers, Multi-Sports, Netball and Rugby. These clubs were offered across the schools ensuring every child from primary one to seven had the opportunity to take part in sport outwith the school day. The afterschool clubs were supported by a dedicated group of volunteers comprising school staff, parents, college students and senior secondary pupils who all gave up their time to coach and support the children.
Pupils also enjoyed participating in Active Schools and Sports Development festivals during 2025/26 as well as running intra-school events, The Daily Mile programme and whole school Health Weeks where local community sports clubs provided free taster sessions. In addition, all schools placed a focus on leadership, running Pupil Sports Committees and primary seven pupils receiving Play Leader training delivered by Active Schools Coordinators.
Councillor Michelle McGinty, Convener of Educational Services, said: “This is fantastic recognition for the schools and everyone involved deserves huge credit. As a Council, we are committed to improving the life chances of our young people and having an active healthy life from a young age is key to being healthy as an adult. Thanks to the commitment and the hard work of all our school staff, Active Schools, our parents and carers and external sports clubs, the pupils have benefited from a wide range of opportunities to try new sports, take part in multi‑school festivals and lead sports development within the school.”

These awards recognise the outstanding effort by education and also the dedicated Active Schools staff who have worked together to ensure pupils have the opportunity to participate and succeed in a good range of physical activity. I would like to thank our dedicated staff, parents and carers who volunteer their time as this has been key in the schools receiving these prestigious awards.”
