Craig, an employee in the local Burgh Surveyor's Department, worked continuously for 72 hours to help rescue people trapped in their bomb-damaged homes.

In one incident, he spent nine hours tunnelling in the rubble of a shattered and burning building to rescue a woman trapped in the basement.
