Cole McGuiganCole McGuigan

Cole McGuigan has been an outstanding pupil during his time at Dumbarton Academy. Cole successfully completed a pre-apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery at West of Scotland College during his S6 following a successful S5 where he achieved success in PE, metal work and the Referee Development Award which supported his ambition of following an apprenticeship pathway.

Cole successfully balanced volunteering and a leadership programme with his college course in S6 whilst applying and interviewing for apprenticeships across the West of Scotland.  Cole was part of a Sports Leadership group and he coached Primary pupils in a variety of activities in his third year.  He took great pride in this and utilised these skills to become the school Sports Ambassador in S6 where he worked closely with Active schools to lead change within the PE department.  He was regularly volunteering in PE as well as running several extra-curricular clubs.

Following a number of offers, Cole has accepted an Apprenticeship with CorrectAir Solutions Scotland and started in May.    Cole has fully embraced the opportunities available to him and was delighted with the flexibility of his S6 curriculum which allowed him to complete his pre-apprenticeship.  We are confident of Cole’s success in the future and would be delighted if he was able to return to the school in the future to share his experiences.

Hannah MartinHannah Martin

Hannah leaves Dumbarton Academy to study for a BSc in Immunology at Glasgow University, following on from a successful pathway at school.

This degree course is the study of the body’s defence (immune) system and how it protects or contributes to disease.  Her interest in this field was sparked by her study of this topic within Biology classes at school alongside her love of the logical aspects of Science and Maths.

Hannah chose this specific course after visiting the Life Sciences department at Glasgow University and knew this was what she wanted to study further. Hannah has an unconditional offer, based on her S5 achieving grade A awards in Higher Chemistry, English, French and Human Biology. She progressed her study in S6 to Advanced Highers in Biology and Chemistry, alongside the Scottish Science Baccalaureate Interdisciplinary project. For her project, Hannah chose to research how the flu vaccination is delivered and ways in which we can improve its uptake amongst the population.  This included examining how feasible it would be to recycle the packaging for the flu injections or nasal sprays.  Hannah developed her confidence by liaising with global organisations such as Astra Zeneca for her project. Hannah was extremely hard working throughout her time at Dumbarton Academy and we cannot wait to follow her journey into further study and beyond.
