The sun is in the sky (sometimes) so it’s time for Summer Reads @wdclibraries!
Running in West Dunbartonshire from the 20 June to the 29 August, Summer Reads is a fun, exciting and free activity for all ages. To take part all you need to do is borrow and read six library books of your choice during the summer holidays.
The main change from previous Summer Reading Challenges is that Summer Reads @wdclibraries is for people of all ages. We’d love for families, friends, and colleagues to get involved and sign up as well as primary aged children. So whether its babies, children, teenagers or adults, let’s share the joy of reading with everyone!
National Year of Reading?
Did you know that 2026 is the National Year of Reading?
Organisations across the UK are focussing on activities and events to encourage people to read for pleasure. We’d love it if you joined Summer Reads this year to show just how much the people of West Dunbartonshire love books and reading.
How does Summer Reads work?
- Sign up for Summer Reads at your local library and receive your collectors card. You can sign up at any WDC Library, including our mobile library.
- Borrow and read six (or more) library books. These can be borrowed from our libraries or from our online collection at https://westdun.spydus.co.uk/. Each time you return a book you will receive a stamp on your collectors card. After 6 stamps you will receive a certificate and special prize.
- Any and all library books, including audiobooks, picture books, comics & graphic novels, eBooks & eAudiobooks, count towards the challenge. As long as they come from a West Dunbartonshire Library.
Prize Draw
Everyone who completes Summer Reads, by borrowing and reading six library books between 20 June and 29 August, will be entered into a draw for an exciting mystery prize. We can’t tell you what it is, but we know you’ll love it! Just another reason to get involved this summer.

Library membership
If you’re not currently a library member, have lost your card, or can’t remember if you’ve joined the library before it’s not a problem at all, simply drop into your local branch and ask the staff there. They’ll get you signed up and you can enjoy the many benefits of library membership while you take part in Summer Reads @wdclibraries.
Online Book Collection
As well as printed books, we have a great selection of eBooks and eAudiobooks available to download to phones, tablets, laptops and computers through the Borrowbox App for free. If you use a digital title as part of Summer Reads, simply let library staff know and they will stamp your collectors card. Most importantly
Summer Reads is a free, enjoyable, focused way to encourage reading for pleasure, and most importantly it should be fun. So pick whatever books you want, don’t worry about what anyone else is reading, and just enjoy it!
